I never tire of either painting or photographing found still lifes, like this one of the corner of my desk. I'm not sure I even meant to take this image. But I had it in my files (I virtually never delete an image) and it has been popping up in front of me for a couple of years. Today, I finally the saw possibility inherent in the photo. I cropped out everything that seemed less than necessary, and ended up with an image I feel was worth the wait.

STILL LIFE AT THE RANCH / Daily Photograph #2091

iPhone 4s / PhotoForge2

Thea and I were dancing to the music of Kim Treiber and Gary Roller a couple of nights ago at Our friend Lana's The Ranch Gallery. I glanced over Thea's shoulder and caught a glimpse of this “found” still life. She had taken off her Serape wrap and draped it over a convenient guitar. I had to stop, briefly, whip out my iPhone, and capture it.

(Shamelus plug) Our daughter Rosa's jewelry is featured in The Ranch, and it's flying off the shelf! We are so proud of her. See her work here: rosakilgore.com.

Here's another shot taken with my iPad. Not a great photograph, granted. But the last thing I bought an iPad for is the camera. This shot, however, and the one I posted yesterday, have me really fascinated by the potential ways this device might be used. I will definitely be exploring its capabilities and limitations in the future as well as comparing the results taken with other cameras.

CHURCH WINDOW / Daily Photograph #1,914

On my way to a branding on Rowe Mesa last year, I stopped off in San José del Vado, between Santa Fe and Las Vegas, in search of subjects for my photographs and paintings. This found still life in the window of the adobe church in the beautiful small village was just the sort of thing I was hoping to find.

I'm in Taos! No, not to stay, but to deliver the latest batch of daily paintings, unload and reload Betsy, take care of some business, plan my next move, and mainly to visit my lovely bride! And Atticus Catticus who has grown huge, and isn't sure I'm welcome in my own home.

Where to next? I don't know, but I'll let you know as soon as I do.

On the way, I stopped in Gallup to stretch my legs, get an Indian jewelry fix and to have a taco and some beans in my favorite little hole in the wall cafe while listening to the busy train traffic just across the road. When I looked up and saw the still lfe with cereal boxes, with a mirror behind, I just had to get into the act.

Two for the price of one! I guess. I didn't ask. These two Mickeys at the Quartzsite Flea Market were looking pretty drab, like just about everything there, until I got them onto my iPad and juiced them up a bit. Thay look like they're having a better time now!

SANTA FE STUDIO

This was a wall in my Santa Fe studio. It was a great studio, but the time came to move along in life, time to get back into travel mode. That little dragon, by the way, there in the center of the narrow shelf, is one of my favorite posessions. I bought it in the Mercado Lagunilla in Mexico City. It’s based on a dog skull, with a carved wooden head, legs, and tail, crudely painted, and has a row of horse hair tufts running down it’s back. Very inventive, I don’t know if it was originally a kid’s school project, a shaman’s medicine tool, or simply a piece of art. To me, it’s definitely a piece of art, and one that I appreciate more the more I look at it.

PORTAL STILL

I shot this with a white on white, very subtle effect in mind. But when I saw it on my computer, I knew it could be something much stronger. I worked it back and forth in ACDSee Pro5 a few times, and, finally decreased the exposure quite a bit, resulting in the strong, almost neon colors. A couple more subtle tweaks and I had an image I’m really pleased with.

HOLLYHOCKS AND NOT

Painted Hollyhocks on a sign outside a shop in Santa Fe, backing up the real thing. Couldn’t pass that up!

“Hollyhock Painter” is often used as a disparaging remark in these parts. I think that’s kind of silly. I’m of the opinion that a bad painting is a bad painting and a good painting is a good painting. The subject might be clichéd, but if it’s well represented, it is raised above cliché. Why limit art by deeming subject or style or movement as unfashionable, out of date, used up or hackneyed? If  a work moves the viewer as well as the artist, if there is an unspoken communication, an enlightenment or an awakening, that’s the thing that matters. Not the subject matter.

Oh, well, at least I haven’t heard anyone called a “Hollyhock Photographer”.
